Alice Lovina Griffin

Alice Lovina Griffin Porter was born March 21, 1856 in the Sugarhouse Ward in Salt Lake City, Utah. The daughter of Charles Emerson Griffin and Sarah Smith. Her father was born in Essex, Chittenden County, Vermont on May 10, 1836. He was the son of Alkbert Baily Griffin, who was the son of Samuel Griffin. Her Grandmother’s name was Abigail, daughter of Paul and Ann Varney. Her mother, Sarah Smith was the daughter of Hyrum Smith and Jerusha Barden and was born 2 Oct 1837 in Kirtland, Ohio while her father was in Far West Missouri. Jerusha died soon after.

Her father and mother were married when Charles was 17 years old by President Heber C. Kimball, on January 16, 1854. Alice’s grandfather was one of the six original members of the Church, and her grandfather Griffin was converted in 1842 by Mormon Elders and shortly afterwards moved with his family to Nauvoo, Illinois.
